Games Like Kingdom Rush: The Best Alternatives in 2026

Ironhide Game Studio's Kingdom Rush has been the standard for mobile tower defense since 2011. The series now has six main games. Kingdom Rush 6: Genesis TD came out on September 24, 2026. If you've played through all of them and want more, the good news is that plenty of games share some of its DNA. The bad news is that very few share all of it.

This guide breaks down what actually makes Kingdom Rush feel like Kingdom Rush. Then it recommends games that match each part of that, on iPhone, Android and PC.

Disclosure: we're Context Limit, and we make an upcoming tower defense game called Titan Defense Chronicles. It's included at the end in its own labeled section, not ranked against games you can buy today.

What makes Kingdom Rush great?

Before you pick an alternative, it helps to know which part of Kingdom Rush you'll miss most.

Fixed build spots on hand-made maps

Kingdom Rush doesn't let you build anywhere. Each map has a limited number of build plots along winding roads, so every level is a designed puzzle rather than an open sandbox.

Barracks that physically block the road

The barracks tower is the series' signature. Its soldiers stand in the road and hold enemies in place while your archers and mages hit them. Blocking adds a positional layer that pure shooting games don't have.

A hero you move by hand

You drag a hero around the map to plug leaks, tank a boss or finish off stragglers. Alliance (2024) lets you bring two heroes at once.

Aimed spells and "call early" bonuses

Reinforcements and a meteor-style spell reward you for paying attention. Calling the next wave early earns extra gold.

Premium-first pricing

Mobile versions of the main games are sold upfront (Vengeance $4.99, Alliance and Genesis $6.99 on iOS), and the battles play offline. Optional extra heroes and towers are also sold, and the older, free-to-start versions of the original Kingdom Rush and Frontiers show ads on iOS.

The best games like Kingdom Rush

1. Bloons TD 6: the deepest path tower defense

Platforms: iOS, Android, PC, Xbox, PlayStation, Switch · Price: $6.99 on iOS, plus optional purchases

Bloons TD 6 doesn't have barracks or a medieval setting. What it has is the genre's deepest tower upgrade system: three paths per tower with crosspathing, plus heroes and four-player co-op. If what you loved in Kingdom Rush was the tower choices and the hard late levels, this is the next stop. You can also get it with no in-app purchases on Apple Arcade (Bloons TD 6+) or Netflix.

Shares with Kingdom Rush: fixed paths, heroes, strong offline single player.

2. Realm Defense: Hero Legends TD: closest feel on free-to-play mobile

Developer: Babeltime · Platforms: iOS, Android · Price: free with in-app purchases and ads

Realm Defense follows the same hero-led fantasy formula, with more than 300 levels. The App Store listing says it contains ads and calls it an online game. If that model doesn't bother you, it's the most Kingdom Rush-like free game on phones.

Shares with Kingdom Rush: fantasy setting, heroes, a long campaign.

3. Defender's Quest and Defender's Quest 2: heroes as towers

Developer: Level Up Labs · Platforms: PC (Steam), plus consoles for the first game · Price: premium

What if every tower were a hero? Defender's Quest has you recruit, level and equip an RPG party, then place them on the field like towers. The sequel, Mists of Ruin, came to Steam on January 30, 2025, for $19.99.

Shares with Kingdom Rush: hero progression, a story campaign, premium pricing.

4. Thronefall: build, then fight

Developer: Grizzly Games (IP now owned by Mythwright) · Platforms: PC, Switch, iOS · Price: premium on PC and Switch; try before you buy on iOS

In Thronefall you build on preset plots by day, and at night your monarch rides into battle next to the towers. Runs are short and the art is minimal. Of all the games here, it does the most with the "hero on the field" idea.

Shares with Kingdom Rush: fixed build spots, a hero you control, tight hand-made maps.

5. Dungeon Warfare 2 and 3: trap combos on fixed routes

Developer: Valsar / Excidium · Platforms: Dungeon Warfare 2 on iOS ($4.99) and Steam; Dungeon Warfare 3 on Steam (August 2025)

Here you defend a dungeon from adventurers with traps that push, burn and launch them. It's path-based like Kingdom Rush, with more focus on chaining traps together than on unit blocking.

Shares with Kingdom Rush: designed maps, a premium model.

6. Iron Marines and Iron Marines Invasion: same studio, different genre

Developer: Ironhide Game Studio · Platforms: iOS, Android, Steam

These aren't tower defense. Ironhide describes Iron Marines as a sci-fi RTS. They do share Kingdom Rush's art style, humor, heroes and level design, so if what you're really after is "more Ironhide", play these.

Shares with Kingdom Rush: studio, tone, heroes.

7. Fieldrunners 2: the other 2010s mobile classic

Developer: Subatomic Studios · Platforms: iOS, Steam · Price: free with in-app purchases on iOS

Fieldrunners games let you build on open ground to shape the enemy route, which is called mazing. That makes them a good contrast to Kingdom Rush's fixed plots. The original Fieldrunners is still sold on iOS for $2.99, though it hasn't been updated since 2018.

Shares with Kingdom Rush: era, polish, a cartoon style.

8. Arknights: hard tactics, with a gacha economy

Developer: Hypergryph / Studio Montagne (Yostar) · Platforms: iOS, Android, PC client · Price: free-to-play gacha

Arknights takes Kingdom Rush's blocking mechanic to an extreme. Every ground unit can block a set number of enemies, and placement is everything. It's an online gacha game, so it isn't premium-friendly, but tactically it's one of the closest matches.

Shares with Kingdom Rush: blocking, hand-made maps, hard challenge stages.

9. Legion TD 2: competitive lane building

Developer: AutoAttack Games · Platforms: PC · Price: $24.99

If you want other people to play against, Legion TD 2 is 2v2 wave defense where you also send mercenaries at the other team. It's a very different pace, but it's the best competitive game in the genre.

10. Kingdom Rush 6: Genesis TD, if you skipped it

Platforms: iOS, Android, Steam (Windows, macOS) · Price: $6.99 on iOS, $19.99 on Steam

Easy to say, but worth saying: if you haven't played the September 2026 prequel yet, it's the most Kingdom Rush thing you can play right now.

On our radar (disclosure: we make this one)

Titan Defense Chronicles (coming soon)

We're building Titan Defense Chronicles for players who want Kingdom Rush's core and a different point of view. It's not released yet. Here is how it compares, honestly:

  • Same core, more guilds: a Barracks guild whose footmen block the road, an Archery Guild that can hit flyers, a Mage Tower that ignores armor, a Dwarven Bombard for splash damage, and a Chapel of Light that heals your fighters and smites the undead. Five more join them: a Merchant Guild that earns gold every wave, a Ballista Tower with huge range and armor-piercing bolts, a Frost Spire that slows, an Alchemist Workshop whose fire flasks burn the ground, and a Druid Grove that roots enemies in place. All ten upgrade through ranks I to V.
  • Heroes: three heroes you move around the map. Seren the Stormcaller has Storm, Sir Aldric Lionheart has Rally, and Lyra Swiftwind has Arrow Rain. Each levels up and spends skill points on Vitality, Power and Mastery.
  • Different camera: it's a side-view game. Enemies march down stacked cliff tiers linked by stairways, and you build on the ledges. We explain the difference between side-view and path tower defense here.
  • War Council: a meta-progression where you earn Renown from every battle, even the ones you lose. You spend it to recruit guilds, open ranks III to V, and choose one of three specialization branches per guild, which you can respec for free.
  • Campaign, honestly: 50 levels in four chapters, with boss battles against Titan Golems and Malgrath the Lich. Only the first 12 maps are hand-made; later chapters revisit them mirrored, a floor deeper, or both. Every level also replays at ten escalating ranks (I to X) that add floors. Kingdom Rush has more unique maps. We'd rather say that than oversell.
  • Pricing: on iPhone, iPad and Android, the first three levels are free, then each chapter is $0.99, or $3.99 for all 4 chapters, as one-time purchases. No ads, no premium currency, no energy timers, and it plays fully offline. It's premium on Steam (Windows, Mac, Linux and Steam Deck), with full controller support.
