Best Tower Defense Games in 2026 (Mobile and PC)

Tower defense is one of the few genres that works just as well on a phone in a waiting room as on a PC with a controller. The core loop has barely changed in twenty years. Enemies walk a route, you build towers beside it, and you spend gold well enough that nothing reaches the gate. What has changed is everything around that loop: heroes, roguelite runs, base building, co-op, and pricing models that range from a single purchase to a gacha economy.

This list covers the tower defense games we think are most worth your time in October 2026, on both mobile and PC. We checked platforms and pricing on official store pages this month. Prices change often, so treat them as a guide.

Disclosure: we are Context Limit, a small studio making a tower defense game called Titan Defense Chronicles. It isn't out yet, so it isn't ranked here. You'll find it in a clearly labeled "on our radar" section at the end.

The best tower defense games in 2026

1. Kingdom Rush 5: Alliance TD

Developer: Ironhide Game Studio · Released: July 2024 · Platforms: iOS, Android, Steam, Mac

Ironhide's Kingdom Rush series is the reference point for modern "path" tower defense. You get fixed build spots along winding roads, four tower types that branch into specialist upgrades, a hero you move around the map, and spells you aim yourself. Alliance lets you field two heroes at once, which adds a real layer of decision-making to every level.

On iOS it costs $6.99 upfront, with optional purchases for extra heroes and towers. Apple Arcade subscribers can play Kingdom Rush 5: Alliance TD+, which arrived on July 3, 2025, with no ads or in-app purchases.

Best for: anyone who wants polished, hand-crafted levels with a fair difficulty curve.

2. Bloons TD 6

Developer: Ninja Kiwi · Released: 2018 · Platforms: iOS, Android, Steam, Epic, Xbox, PlayStation, Switch (June 2026)

Bloons TD 6 is the genre's long-running live game. It has three upgrade paths per tower, heroes, a deep late game, and four-player co-op. It's still getting regular updates eight years in. It costs $6.99 on iOS, plus optional purchases, and the store page says single-player works offline.

You can also play it with no in-app purchases through Bloons TD 6+ on Apple Arcade or Bloons TD 6 NETFLIX for Netflix members.

Best for: players who want a game they can sink hundreds of hours into.

3. Kingdom Rush 6: Genesis TD

Developer: Ironhide Game Studio · Released: September 24, 2026 · Platforms: iOS, Android, Steam (Windows, macOS)

The newest Kingdom Rush is a prequel set in the kingdom's early days, where you face a young Vez'nan. The format is classic Kingdom Rush, and the iOS listing says "No connection required." It costs 6.99 * *oniOSand * *19.99 on Steam, and some premium heroes and towers are sold separately.

It's so new that we'd call it a strong pick for series fans rather than a settled classic. Read a few reviews before you buy.

Best for: Kingdom Rush veterans who have finished Alliance.

4. Thronefall

Developer: Grizzly Games (IP now owned by Mythwright) · Released: 1.0 in October 2024 · Platforms: PC, Switch, iOS (May 2025)

Thronefall strips a kingdom builder down to its essentials. You build during the day. At night you ride out as the monarch and fight next to your towers. Runs are short, and the minimalist art makes the battlefield easy to read. The iOS version is free to download as a "try before you buy" trial. A paid DLC, Craaghelm, is listed on Steam for November 11, 2026.

Best for: players who want a tight 20-minute session with a little action.

5. Plants vs. Zombies: Replanted

Developer: PopCap / EA · Released: October 23, 2025 · Platforms: PC, PS5, PS4, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, Switch, Switch 2

The game that brought lane defense to the mainstream got an HD remaster in 2025, priced at $19.99. If you only know the mobile version, be aware that the original Plants vs. Zombies on iOS is now free to play with ads, and removing them is a separate purchase. Replanted is the clean premium way to replay it. For how lane defense differs from path and side-view tower defense, see our sub-genre guide.

Best for: newcomers, families, and nostalgia.

6. Mindustry

Developer: Anuke · Released: 2019 · Platforms: Steam, iOS, Android, itch.io

Mindustry combines tower defense with factory automation. You mine ore, run conveyor lines, and feed ammunition to turrets that defend your core. It's open source, has no ads or in-app purchases, and costs $9.99 on Steam. The developer also offers it free on some platforms.

Best for: players who like Factorio-style logistics as much as defense.

7. Orcs Must Die! Deathtrap

Developer: Robot Entertainment · Released: January 28, 2025 · Platforms: PC (Steam, Epic), Xbox Series X|S

This is action tower defense. You run around the fortress in third person, lay traps in choke points, and fight alongside them. Deathtrap adds a roguelite structure and co-op for one to four players.

Best for: PC and Xbox players who want to be on the battlefield, not above it.

8. Arknights

Developer: Hypergryph / Studio Montagne (published globally by Yostar) · Released: 2020 globally · Platforms: iOS, Android, official PC client (August 2026)

Arknights is a free-to-play gacha game, and you should know what that means before you start. It's also one of the most tactically demanding tower defense games on mobile. You place collectible "operators" on a grid. Ground units physically block lanes, while ranged units cover them. It's an online game, so it won't suit offline play.

Best for: players who enjoy collecting characters and don't mind a free-to-play economy.

9. Cataclismo

Developer: Digital Sun (published by Hooded Horse) · Released: 1.0 on March 20, 2025 · Platforms: PC (Steam, GOG, Epic)

Cataclismo is a hybrid of real-time strategy and tower defense where you design your own fortress, brick by brick. The walls are physics-based and will collapse if you build them badly. It's a heavier, slower game than most on this list.

Best for: builders and RTS fans.

10. Dungeon Warfare 3

Developer: Excidium / Valsar · Released: August 29, 2025 · Platforms: PC (Windows, macOS)

You are the dungeon, and the adventurers are the invaders. You build traps and machines, push heroes into spikes, and chain combos. If you're on mobile, Dungeon Warfare 2 is still sold on iOS for $4.99 as a one-time purchase, though it hasn't been updated since 2019.

Best for: trap-combo puzzle fans.

11. Defender's Quest 2: Mists of Ruin

Developer: Level Up Labs (published by Armor Games Studios) · Released: January 30, 2025 · Platforms: Steam

The Defender's Quest games replace towers with a party of RPG heroes that you recruit, level and position on the field. The sequel costs $19.99 on Steam.

Best for: RPG players who want a story with their strategy.

12. Isle of Arrows

Developer: Gridpop · Released: 2022 · Platforms: Steam (PC, Mac), iOS, Android

This one plays like a board game crossed with tower defense. You draw tiles, place them to grow an island, and the path, towers and defenses come together as you go. It's a premium game: 12.99 * *onSteamand * *5.99 on mobile.

Best for: short, thoughtful runs on a phone.

Honorable mentions

  • Bad North (Raw Fury): tiny procedurally generated islands where you only command squads. A premium game on PC, consoles, iOS and Android.
  • Kingdom Two Crowns (Raw Fury): side-scrolling, coin-driven kingdom defense. A premium game on PC, consoles and mobile.
  • Legion TD 2 (AutoAttack Games): competitive 2v2 lane tower defense on PC, descended from the Warcraft III mod.
  • Element TD 2 (Element Studios): maze-building with 59 towers made from combinations of elements, on PC.

How we chose

We put games first that you can buy and play today, that are still sold on official stores, and that stand out in at least one way: craft, depth, originality, or value. We marked free-to-play economies and ads so you can avoid them if you want. If that's your priority, see our guide to offline tower defense games with no ads.

On our radar (disclosure: we make this one)

Titan Defense Chronicles (coming soon)

Titan Defense Chronicles is our own game, and it's not out yet. It's a hand-painted, 2.5D medieval tower defense game in the classic side-view style. Enemies march down stacked cliff tiers linked by stairways, and every ledge is a place to build.

  • Ten guilds: Barracks, Archery Guild, Mage Tower, Dwarven Bombard, Chapel of Light, Merchant Guild, Ballista Tower, Frost Spire, Alchemist Workshop and Druid Grove, each with ranks I to V and specialization branches.
  • War Council: a meta-progression where you earn Renown from every battle, even the ones you lose, then recruit guilds, open upper tiers and pick specializations (free respec).
  • Three movable heroes: Seren the Stormcaller, Sir Aldric Lionheart and Lyra Swiftwind. Each levels up and spends skill points.
  • Campaign: 50 levels in four chapters (The Goblin March, The Shattered Crown, The Deep Roads, The Titan's Wake), with boss battles against Titan Golems and Malgrath the Lich closing out the chapters. Every level replays at ten escalating ranks (I to X) for bigger rewards.
  • Fair and offline: no ads, no energy timers, and it plays fully offline. On iPhone, iPad and Android you can try the first three levels free, then unlock each chapter for $0.99 or all 4 chapters for $3.99, as one-time purchases with no premium currency. On Steam (Windows, Mac, Linux and Steam Deck) it will be a premium game with full controller support.

It's a spiritual successor to the 2009 iOS game Defender Chronicles. Here's the story of that game. Follow along on the Titan Defense Chronicles page.
