Charm Pricing: Why the Last Digit Is Positioning, Not Math
Everyone knows the $9.99 trick. Everyone still falls for it. Here's why the last digit of your price is a positioning decision, not a math one.

You know this trick. Everyone knows this trick. It still works.
That last part is the interesting part. Charm pricing isn't a secret. Your customers have seen ten thousand prices ending in 9 and they still round them down in their heads. The trick surviving full public knowledge tells you it isn't a trick at all — it's how the brain reads numbers.
Your brain reads left to right, then stops paying attention
The first digit of a price gets disproportionate weight. $2.99 feels closer to $2 than to $3, even though it's one cent from $3. Researchers call this the left-digit effect: your brain anchors on the leftmost digit before it finishes reading the rest of the number.
This is why not all price drops are equal. Going from $3.00 to $2.99 feels like a bigger cut than $3.60 to $3.59 — same one cent, wildly different perception. The first one crosses a digit boundary. The second one doesn't move the number your brain already committed to.
The leftmost digit doesn't just change the perceived cost. It changes the mental category. $99 is "less than a hundred." $100 is "a hundred dollars." Those feel like different kinds of purchase — different levels of scrutiny, different justifications — even though the real gap is a dollar. $999 is "hundreds." $1,000 is "a thousand." Your price is quietly telling the buyer what league of decision they're making.
The one study that makes it undeniable
In 2003, researchers from MIT and the University of Chicago ran the cleanest version of this experiment I know of. They sold the same women's clothing through mail-order catalogs at three prices: $34, $39, and $44.
The winner wasn't the cheapest.
$39 outsold both $34 and $44 — by roughly 24% on average across their tests. Not because 39 is a magic number, but because it lived in the "thirty-something" bucket while being the highest price in that bucket. It squeezed maximum revenue out of customers who never mentally crossed the $40 line.
$39 beat $34. People paid more and bought more, because the number stayed under a psychological ceiling they were unconsciously defending.
Read that twice. Lowering the price to $34 made them less money. The barrier wasn't the dollars. It was the digit.
Every ending signals something
Here's the part most people miss. Charm pricing isn't one move — the specific digit you choose is a positioning statement.

$9.99 screams clearance. $9.97 whispers considered markdown — which is exactly why Costco uses .97 to flag deals without looking cheap. And luxury brands avoid the whole game: Hermès prices a bag at $10,000, not $9,999. The round number is the message. We don't play with your head. We don't need to.
How to actually use it
Two things matter more than picking 9 vs. 7.
- Respect the digit boundaries. If you're at $100, dropping to $99 is worth real money — you crossed a category. If you're at $95, dropping to $94 buys you almost nothing. The value of a price cut depends entirely on whether it crosses a left-digit boundary. Don't discount into the middle of a bucket.
- Match the ending to who you're claiming to be. Every .99 communicates "value brand." That's free if you're a discounter and expensive if you're premium. Apple doesn't end prices in .99 for a reason. Your price ending is a positioning choice wearing a revenue-optimization costume.
Which brings us to the line worth taping to your monitor:
Rule of thumb: The last digit is positioning, not math.
Before you set a price, don't ask "what's the optimal number?" Ask "what does this ending say about us, and is that the thing we want to say?" A $9.99 SaaS plan and a $10 SaaS plan cost the customer a penny apart and tell them two completely different stories about your product.
